What is diference between color of near things and far things in oil painting?

When painting a landscape. Just think this way.. The Colour of the sky is in all things, even some of what you see near to you. Cold winter days, warm summer days, etc.. Different colours in the sky鈥? NOW think of how light plays with these colours from near to far鈥? The farther it is the more sky colour you will need. WHY? Because the waves of light are impeding your vision. You can look at a mountain and see shapes etc where maybe snow is laying, but then there is a shadow underneath the ledge. If the sky is gray leaning towards purple then maybe the snow isn鈥檛 as bright as normal, it might have a tinge more gray purple than on a clear day. As you move closer to you then shapes appear even MORE with more varying colours. Still hit the SKY colour an add to your mixture for the 2nd or 3rd planes of your painting. Just less and less as you get closer. Once you get to the highlights of the painting in the foreground then the sky colour maybe even non-existent





Example of vision. When Monet was going blind his paintings took on BROAD strokes and dark effect. That is what he was seeing. BUT his mixtures were still consistent and held the same values.





This ALSO goes for painting still life. Notice that the lemon is reflecting in the vase or on a tablecloth or even the silver. Lighting in a still life can affect the overall flavor.





The Seven Layers traditional method of painting is VERY much dependent on uniformity of colour and value. The canvas has an under painting of one colour mixed with damar crystals etc鈥? The colors of objects that are near are brighter and defined with more detail, using highlights and shadows to indicate not only an outline filled in with a solid color, but to simulate the actual shape of the object. Colors in the background are generally, grayed out with very little detail. Of course modern abstract painters use different techniques; which can include bright colors in the foreground with tints and shades that can be used to ';push'; the background away from the two-dimensional surface and fool the eye into perceiving depth.
The atmosphere neutralizes colors in the distance, and moves toward blue in them. One can easily see that the sky is blue.
In paintings, the human eye has a tendency to interpret warm colors as 'near' and cool colors as 'far'. The warms are: red, orange, yellow and warm purple (magenta). The cools are: blue, green, and cool purple (tends towards the blues).
