Art portrait oil painting-- what does aag stand for?

My grandfather recently passed away and left us an oil painting that is supposedly of value. It is probably from the 1800s and probably from europe, neither of which we really know though. It has the initials A.A.G. posted on it. Does anybody have any idea what or who aag stands for?

If AAG is on the front of the painting (usually lower left or right) then it will be the artist's initials. There are many European artists from the 1800s who have those initials and without seeing the picture it's virtually impossible to say which one it could be.

If the writing is on the back of the painting, or frame, then it's more likely to be a collector's or gallery mark (either the initials of the collector or gallery, or some sort of stock code). Such marks are very difficult to trace and unless the painting is of great value it's not worth doing so.

PS.

The best thing to do would be to take your picture to an auction house or gallery that deals in antique paintings.
