What makes oil painting cool?

I want to make a list of all the things that make oil painting cool... share your experiences as artists and as audience...

I will formulate the answers into my blog: http://blog.overstockart.comWhat makes oil painting cool?
Because the blending and shading capability are so realistic, compared to acrylics. And as another said, you can work on almost every surface,and you can layer upon layer. Using all different textures with holding it's shape.Yet it's still flexible to do a soft fading mist technique.What makes oil painting cool?
look deeply u ll find somethng real in it shining you can c the shadows reality

With no offense at all, this has to be one of the more odd polls I've ever seen. Thank you.

For me the medium is less important than the motivations, the mobilization of my muse, and the matter, in the subject matter.

As a practicing artist for approximately 50 years, I've likely used every medium available to me, and invented some for my own use.

Certainly Art must be a passion, but need not be judged strictly as good or bad. It is, in the creative individual, a way to articulate, through that form of expression, those passions. If it means anything to the artist, then not much else need matter.

What I most enjoy about Oils is the fluidity and flex of the paint, as applied, pondered, and worked, over and again. That has been a tedious point as well, for me, in that I've had work taking months to ';dry';

Certainly it's a classic medium, still widely used, even in the era of digital photography, and/but can only convey the artists interpretations of reality.

I guess another thought I have that sometimes bothers me is ';copies.'; I've never been a ';master'; but I've never truly enjoyed ';Copy Machines'; either. I GET IT as to the ';Why'; of it, but so much would rather see one of a kind and make a pilgrimage to view it, or show an original, knowing no where is there another.

By the way, the above statement is in no way meant to offend in the context of Overstockart.com. I'm well aware that Art should also be shared and experienced by the masses, and not all of us can afford to own the original.

I too don't get the copy thing either Steven!

OILS WOW! you can smooth them and textures them and build up on them and just smear them everywhere. You can paint on almost any surface unlike other paints.

they are truly the master paint!!!!

YOU have to love em to use em!!!! I am a painter of 37 years and I am a national painter just not known to all. If I was stuck on a beach (i wished) i would definitely want my oils with me.
Its flexibility to mixed with.
