Can an old oil painting be sealed in glass?

You CAN put an oil painting behind glass.. A professional framer will add a breathing area on the back. The painting must sit so many fractions away from the actual surface. No direct sunlight.

I have clients that smoke.... Some of my paintings have been behind glass for 15 years...

My framer is one of the oldest companies in Dallas... Over 40 years as a framer....

No-it has to breath (the canvas) if you are trying to protect it- at least put an angled edge between it and the glass so it won't get stuck-but I wouldn't reccomend it.Can an old oil painting be sealed in glass?
I'm no expert but I used to be friends with a professional picture and I seem to remember him telling me that no, oil paintings can't be placed behind a pane of glass in a framed setting. I don't know why other than it could have something to do with most or all of the chemical, solvents, etc in the paint itself. The need for direct access for the oil to be exposed to oxygen at all times may also be a reason.

Personally, I've never ever seen an oil painting behind glass so I would say with some certainty that it's never done..

To be sure and to find out why you never mix oil and glass, I'd suggest contacting an art gallery or a hobby shop.
