I used to use this technique all the time and it works very well. It can be a good way of sketching in basic forms and making compositional alterations much faster than using oil paint.
The important thing is to allow the acrylic underpainting plenty of time to dry before using the oil paint (at least overnight).
(Painting acrylic over oils is not such a good idea, so once you've started using oil paint you shouldn't use acrylics again on the same picture.)Acrylic underpainting beneath an oil painting -- is this alright?
Should be fine and cheaper. Just not the other way around. I haven't tried it, but have thought of it to save costs on oil paint.
